一、lay 動詞。意思是“放（在……上）”。多指“橫放”。例如：

A clerk laid a slip of paper on the desk。書記員在桌子上放了一張紙。

They laid me down on the bed。 他們把我放倒在床上。

He went over and laid his cup on the tray。他走過去把他的杯子放在托盤上。

二、place 及物動詞。意思是“放在（使處於）某位置”。指把東西放在一定的位置上去。例如：

Place the books in alphabetical order。 把書按字母順序放好。

You place me in a very difficult position。你把我推到一個困難的位置上。

Place the chair in the corner。 把椅子放到角落裡去。

三、put 及物動詞。意思是“放、擱”。用得很廣，可用於人，也可用於物，可用於具體事物，也可用於抽象事物。例如：

Where has he put my clothes？ 他把我的衣服放在哪兒了？

You put too much salt in the food。 你在食物裡放了太多的鹽。

Put a finger on the right spot。 摸清問題的所在。

He tried to put her out of his mind。 他試圖忘掉她。

四、set 動詞。意思是“放置、放（下）、設定”。多指放成垂直的位置的“放”。例如：

Set a ladder against that wall。 把梯子靠在牆上。

He set down his spade and seized a rifle。 他放下鍬就拿住槍。

let‘s set some white flowers among the blue ones。我們把些白花放在藍花裡吧。
