英語中，smell 和 scent 都有“氣味”的意思，但是它們的用法有所不同，在實際的使用中應多加註意。

1。 smell：這個詞既可指香味，也可指臭味。但是一般側重指“臭味”，一種令人不愉快的氣味。

例句1：The smell in his room is really revolting。

他房間裡的氣味真令人作嘔。

2。 scent：這個詞側重指“香味”，一種令人愉快的氣味。

例句2：There is a nice scent in the meeting room。

會議室裡氣味宜人。

以上兩點解釋了這兩個詞的基本區別，因此，當有人對你說：the smell of the perfume 時，雖然是指“香水的氣味”的意思，但是也暗指這個人不太喜歡這種香水味。然而，當有人對你說：the scent of the perfume時，則表明這個人很喜歡這種香水味。

當想表達“沁人心脾的香味”時，我們可以說“a pleasant smell”，也可以說“a pleasant scent”。但 a pleasant scent 更加地道。

那麼我們常常說的“幽香”該如何表達呢？我們可以說：a soft smell， 也可以用 a soft scent 來表達。但是，a soft scent 則更能表達了意味來。

最後想說的是，smell 除了名詞以外，還有動詞的詞性，意思是“味起來”

例句3：My brother told me that the food smelled delicious。

我哥哥對我說這食物聞起來很香。

但是，如果把 delicious 去掉的話，意思就變了。

例句4：My brother told me that the food smelled。

我哥哥對我說食物臭了。
