一、a是英語字母表中的第一個字母。

二、大寫英文字母表示（學業成績）第一等，優，甲：

He got A in the math test yesterday。

三、 （用於單數可數名 詞前，表示到的）一（人、事、物）：

①I have to prepare for an exam。

②Our school has a teacher from the US。

l‘m shy and l am afraid to speak to her。

四、a和an是不定冠詞，它們的基本用法是：

1。泛指一類人或事物，並不表示具體的某個人或事物。如：

My parents want me to be a doctor， but ’m not sure about that。

我父母想讓我當一名醫生， 但是我對此卻沒有把握。

2。指同類事物中的任何一個，相當於any，翻譯成中文時可以不譯出：

A square has four sides。正方形有四條邊。

3。表示數量，可譯為“一”，但表示數量的概念時沒有one語氣強烈。如：

You‘ll have to wait an hour or two。

你不得不等一兩個小時。

4。用在表示時間、速度、價格等意義的名詞之前，表示“每一”，相當於every：

Mary can type 40 words a minute。

我每分鐘可以打40個單詞。

He can walk ten kilometers an hour。

他每小時可以走10千米的路程。

5。用在一些固定片語中：

in ahurry ，have a rest， have a good time等。
