【追根溯源】

catch作為名詞，最早的用法可追溯到14世紀晚期，主要表示“device to hold a latch of a door； a trap”，即“固定門閂的裝置；陷阱”。

catch作為動詞，最早可追溯到13世紀，源自古北法語單詞cachier，表示“to take， capture”，即“接住；抓住”。

【慣常用法】

catch作為名詞，主要表示“接（球等）；總捕獲量”，如：

Catch is complete， but where‘s the ball？

接住了，但是球在哪兒呢？

The boat brought back a big catch of fish。

這條船捕魚滿載而歸。

catch作為動詞，主要表示“接住；抓住；趕上”，如：

She threw the ball and he caught it。

她把球丟擲來，他接住了。

He chased after the burglar but couldn’t catch him。

他追趕那個盜賊卻沒有抓住他。

I must go - I have a train to catch。

我得走了——我要趕火車。

【注意】

英語中有不少有關catch的習語，比如：

catch sb‘s eye 引起某人注意；惹人注目

catch sb red-handed 當場抓住；現場捕獲

catch sb’s fancy 吸引某人；中某人的意

catch sb on the raw （BrE） 觸到某人的痛處；揭某人的瘡疤

（caught） between a rock and a hard place 進退兩難；左右為難

catch your breath（由於恐懼、震驚等）屏息，屏氣

catch-22 第22條軍規；進退兩難的境地；兩難選擇

【教材例項】

《新概念英語1》第11課和第95課的課文裡，出現了這麼幾句話：

- Here you are。 （給你。）

- Catch！ （接著！）

We want to catch the eight nineteen to London。

我們要乘8點19分的火車去倫敦。

《新概念英語2》第20課和第33課的課文裡，出現了這麼幾句話：

I often fish for hours without catching anything。

我經常幾個小時什麼也釣不著。

One afternoon she set out from the coast in a small boat and was caught in a storm。

一天下午，她駕駛一艘小船從海岸出發，後來遇上了暴風雨。
